When choosing a wooden staircase for your home or company, you have two choices. Do you opt for a mass produced 'kit' staircase? Or do you have a staircase beautifully crafted by hand to fit the exact space utilising carefully selected hardwood timbers?

Since 1984, I have designed, manufactured and fitted bespoke timber staircases. During that period, I have successfully met the requirements of numerous clients, be it a large elegant hardwood spiral staircase, a grand circular staircase, or a simple but stylish access systems.

The spiral staircases are individually made to measure, usually in hardwood which are designed and constructed in the best traditions of the Arts and Crafts Movement (all styles can be accommodated). Hand tools have now given way to power tools, although the craftsmanship and dedication to detail remains.

The advantage of this flexibility means that I am able to incorporate ideas from my client or thier architect so long as the design remains within the limits set by building regulations, structural stability and good building practice.

My original design criteria was to produce a Free Standing Hardwood Spiral Staircase with little or no flex, that looks as stylish as possible. This entailed looking at each aspect of the staircase and coming up with superior designed features wherever possible. These include:

One piece handrail

All my handrails are manufactured in a single piece, cut from one length of timber (Oak, Ash and Maple - up to 4.8m can be sourced. Other timbers are not so readily available in such long lengths). When fitted the handrail (with a cross section of 65mm x 65mm aprox) becomes a structural element within the staircase and spreads the users weight throughout the staircase greatly increasing stability.

Tripod Base

All of my spiral staircases have three points of contact at their base. This stops the staircase and the bottom newel from 'ROCKING'. Some spiral staircase on the market have only two points of contact and have tried to remedy this problem by introducing an optional bracing piece!!

Central Column

The central column (135mm aprox) is continues throughout the full hieght of the staircase culminating at the top with a 135mm newel post and ball (most other hardwood spirals on the market drop to a 90mm newel some even to a square newel). The level of decoration in the central column and newel post can be selected according to taste (many examples can be seen in the picture gallery).

Structural Risers

The building regulations stipulate that no opening in the staircase may be more than 100mm. This means a partial riser is required on all open tread staircases. The half risers on my handbuilt staircases are morticed into the central column. This braces the treads to the column and greatly improves the stability of the staircase.

Raised and Fielded Panels

I use raised and fielded panels to enhance the appearance of plain surfaces. This can be particularly effective when applied to curved surfaces (many examples can be seen in the picture gallery).

Individual requirements.

The building regulations require minimum diameter staircase for different applications. For instance a spiral as a main staircase, giving access to more than one bedroom would need to have an external diameter of 1900mm. As a guide to price a spiral staircase of this diameter in Oak would cost £6,000.00 including VAT and fitting. However some other factors will need to be determined before final costing design and construction can be concluded.
